Shopify publishes exact ceilings for product media. Everything below is taken from the Shopify Help Center page on product media types; no third-party numbers.

Practical readings of the rules

The help page states the image cap as up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels, with files smaller than 20 MB. Stay inside all three.
SVG works as product media, so line-art or logo products can ship resolution-independent images.
HEIC straight from an iPhone uploads without conversion.
For 3D, files over 15 MB are optimized automatically and smaller ones are converted to both GLB and USDZ for device compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best product photo size for Shopify?

Shopify's help documentation states that square images of 2048 x 2048 px usually display best. That size stays well under the 25 megapixel and 20 MB caps while keeping enough resolution for zoom.

Why was my product image rejected?

The two hard limits are 25 megapixels (for example anything over 5000 x 5000 px) and 20 MB of file size. An image that exceeds either will not upload.

Which image formats does Shopify accept?

Shopify recommends PNG first, then JPEG. It also accepts PSD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP.

Can I upload video as product media?

Yes. Shopify accepts .mp4, .mov and .webm files up to 10 minutes, 1 GB and 4K (4096 x 2160 px), and serves them as MP4 or HLS. YouTube and Vimeo links can be embedded instead.
